I've noticed that one of the big eaterie establishments in town separates its glass in to large green wheelie bins (less to do with planet saving, more to do with operational ease I suspect). Along comes the compactor truck and it all gets lifted in to the back and sent to the tip.

Is it just me or does anyone else think that is verging on the insane? And is this what happens in all catering establishements?

Hi Admin

I may be wrong but i believe that ONLY the clear glass gets sent away and recycled. I also understand that the other colours get crushed (by special crusher) and can be used for backfilling holes instead of stone dust or gravel (i also think its free but you pay only for the delivery). However as the supply of crushed glass out weighs the demand it therefore still goes to the tip. So, be it as coloured bottles from the catering industry or as crushed coloured glass it will end there one way or another.

I also heard a rumor that although it can be used to back fill holes around drain pipes etc where stone dust / gravel would be used it will not be accepted as possible by relevant building standards people even though it has been passed for that use?

PLEASE NOTE THAT I STAND TO BE CORRECTED AS I MAY BE WRONG! - PLEASE CORRECT ME IF SO!!!
