I attended a meeting between Christmas and New Year with Chris Elliott and C & E to discuss proposals for 2008 marketing plan. As expected, its pretty much then same as 2007 with tweaks to maximise response per pound based on figures produced on 2007.

Main areas of change will be in printed media which is more age related (50+) with a move away from the A groups to the B C types which is really our market, and theres a lot more of them !

Tour operators still form the bulk of the market and will continue to be supported and C & E are working on new routes/catchment destinations which should hopefully come to fruition in the early part of the season.

Chris Elliott will be contacting you all soon to give an overview of 2007 together with a run down of 2008 strategy

When I get more info I will of course post this

Well I would prefer C&E to be working on the Airport runway first of all.
It seems we are going to struggle to keep the existing operators flying so why start trying to develop new routes.
Its all a bit cart before the horse really.
Developing a strategy for Tourism or indeed an environment in which it can survive is not rocket science .
Whilst it hurts me to say it ,just take a little look at Jersey and see how its done.
Where we are going with our current direction is questionable. It seems to be all talk and little little tangible action.

DOnt think the Run Way is in the fold of the Tourism Plan but I know where you are comming from.

For some time now, C & E have been fighting to make the airport an island resource instead of it being part of public services and harbours, if we stopped promoting the island due to the runway we would have packed in years ago.

Funny you should mention Jersey,

Big Run Way

Loads of Planes in and Out

New Hotels

Huge Investment

So how much better than our fugures are they achieiving for all this dosh ?

WHo's making the big profits ?

I thought we had joined up Government on the Island-thats what I was promised !
One Island one Govt One Airport. No excuses please.
If the marketing policy is to develop new routes and Flybe cant get their plane to land on the existing runway then you have got to ask yourself have we got our Priorities right ?
Whose made big profits or who is going to make big profits ?
Aledgidly our busiest Hotel was the Vaz"no one could compete with it" but if you asked me will it outperform the SAS Radisson in 2008 ,I would have to say no.I dont believe that a runway is all about Tourism either,it is a vital lifeline for all Islanders and local businesses too.
When we look back at who used to Fly into Guernsey and where they flew to you have got to ask the question why they all stopped ?Schipol for instance Aurigny did that one to Holland and very nice it was too.Why did it stop ?
We own that airline now but will it be bringing on new routes like this ?
At the moment it seems Blue Islands are the more likely to develop significant routes like they have done with Paris.

HeHe ITs a good one this !!!

Seems to me that C & E with Visit Guernsey is fullfilling its end of the bargain by looking for carriers and encouraging them to come to Guernsey which in turn, will put pressure on Public Services and the states in general to take strategic approach to the airport and indeed the harbours but as they say "you can't educate pork"

BLue Islands with the best will in the world will hardly be the saviour for the islands as the numbers involved with this carrier will always be limited. There price structure is aimed squarely at the business user who is more time sensitive rather than price.

We can all bang on about having joined up government but this bunch cant wirte joined up never mind govern, petty individuals with personal agendas are never a good recipe for success or dynamic government.

Lets also remember, 50% of flights are individual travellers going too and from the island, yes it always seems that its the hotel industry who goes on about transport links and it would be a refreshing change for other industries to start getting vocal on these issues.

I think C & E's efforts under the Visit Guernsey banner to create more routes may seem from the outside that its only hoteliers who want more routes, this is misleading, but, as we were one of the only industries to put money into the war / bribe chest to get planes here it is understandable. Perhaps "Finance Guernsey" or whatever they are called should throw some dosh in the pot too.

Perhaps a better way to produce actual tourism visitors would be to "encourage" more charter flights who would be rewarded on visitor numbers, they market there package to a European audience, fly over here for a week and there you go - easy.

Well, I say easy, BUT, because we dont have suitable areas at the airport to park planes up they cant come anyway !!!.

Lets not ask for joined up goverment its a load of bollox, We need one fat controller with his hand a cheque book, spend the dosh and move on, perhaps if we did this, then the population would stop banging its head against the wall and therefore put less strain on the mental health facilities on the island so we would need another looney bin for Roffey

Well its just a thought and whilst 2008's plan is very much based on 2007 I wonder if we shouldn't be tweaking it a little to keep up with current affairs ?Just how flexible is this plan going to be?
The fact that with the Euro gaining in the exchange rate against the pound just made Guernsey 15% cheaper to come on holiday for Europeans and thats just in the last four months.
Now lets capitilise on that fact .
Mind you ,it could be said that U.K visitors will find Europe 15% more expensive so we could capitilise there on the short break market too.
Any resort with U.S dollar will be quite attractive to make your money go further for both U.K residents and Europeans.

Spoke to CE last week who is trying to divert some of the war chest to take advantage of the Euro, it does help with the announcement of the PAris link giving another area to target but at least with Flybe doing it, they have a vested interest to promote the link
