A proposal in February will go before the House for Guernsey to move to Central European Time. Proposed by Deputy Roffey the argument is largely concerning environmental benefits in terms of less energy use and social benefits to lighter evenings in the summer.

What are your views and would this proposal impact on you business?

A view

For the idea to work all the islands need to be in harmony with the change.
There may be advantages, and may be disadvantages, and for us to see if te advantages outway the disadvantages, a view is perhaps vote 'to give it a try' one year so the idea can be properlt assessed. If it does or doesn't work then at least we will understand why If being possitive, and there any many advantages, then we would be well armed to continue with the idea during subsequent years.

While I applaud the sentiment and reason for the change, I am inclined to agree with Chris we would look silly if we did this alone.
From a business prospective I think it would need thinking through thoroughly with the regard to airport and flight times.
For our business, it would mean board meetings would inevitably start later and finish later due to the arrival of clients and advisors, meaning the working day will be pushed back an hour.
I also think it is likely to be confusing for tourists and people phoning businesses alike.

Nice idea but totally impractical.

It's a bit hard to separate the business arguments from personal opinion on this one. From our business perspective it will make no difference to us whatsoever; personally I like the idea of the lighter evenings.

For our business, it would mean board meetings would inevitably start later
Graham are you referring to flight times? If so, are you saying that the flight slots could not be shifted if we were out of sync with the UK?

Our greatest challenge going forward is to continue to grow our local economy within a new fiscal environment, without any increase in resources, and against a background of a great deal of uncertainty internationally. In such circumstances, experimenting with a change which seems to offer no business benefits and may well in practice irritate more people than it will please is a diversion which we can surely do without at this particular juncture.

I certainly agree with the comments about "going it alone", if Jersey aren't interested in joining the party from day one.

As for changing airport slot times, we should take care there as well. Once lost, peak time slots may not be recoverable, if we tried to revert to UK time in the future.

With so many important issues to address, I fail to see the logic in this being raised at the present time.

The energy P&L can't make a compelling case either way so it is not a green issue. It will vastly complicate everything we do with people in the UK, so what do we stand to gain? It makes little or no sense.

The 2 1/2 days they will take to debate it will no doubt be in line with the time they spent debating the flagpole in the middle of the roundabout...
