| If so, we would like to hear from you about the successes and failures of apprentices and apprenticeships on the island. The College of Further Education has been teaching apprentices for over 40 years, so there must be many of you out there. We would like to collate testimonials from former apprentices in order to be able to illustrate the link between their training and where they have got to now. Of particular interest would be those apprentices who have gone on to start their own businesses, and possibly continuing to train new apprentices.

I'm not sure if this is exactly what you're after but we've recently employed a junior from the CFE halfway through an Advanced IT course, a 17 year old. Balanced 'nipper' capable and coming on a storm. Before employment we discussed his position with his family and his tutor; their main concern that if he didn't complete his course and he hadn't passed his probabtion period he would have lost out. That decision was left for them to and he took the position.
We, as a company, did not do any IT courses in Guernsey, but we do train all of our people in-house. You of all people will know that their aren't many courses for our type of web based businesses. By the time you've learned anything, the technology has moved on. We do where possible continue to bring on local talent
As for starting up their own businesses. I'm of the belief that enterprise and entrepreneurialship isn't something that can be taught. You either have the cahunas or you don't. |

I was actually asking for specific apprentice info on behalf of Hannah Beacom's Education sub committee. It was something HB mentioned a couple of week's ago following a meeting she had with the Island's Education Department. They would like to collate some information about apprenticeship schemes and how successful they've been in the past 40 years.
I know what you mean about the IT courses. I think there are more coming online locally now, but it has taken time for the island to develop the skillset required to teach IT locally, and those which are available are constantly out of date with regards an industry like yours.
