In a vain attempt to fill the black hole Treasury and resources have decided to sell off yet more of the family silver to the detriment of the Tourism Industry. This idea is just plain ludicrous !!!.

I can understand a feeling that the Visitor Centre is rather large but what they fail to mention in this rather one sided, done deal, news release is that the visitor centre has 170,000 visitors a year as well. Can you imagine our happy little visitors (often first timers) queing for information at lunch time with all those ebay parcels !!, hardly the right impression.

You have been warned, get on to your local deputy and get this daft idea stopped before we can have some dialog.

Guernsey Post set to move

POSTAL services should soon be available from the former States Offices at North Plantation.

Guernsey Post is to vacate its Nelson Place premises in Smith Street, which have been earmarked for sale or lease to the private sector by the Treasury and Resources Department.

The Post Office could be sharing the ground floor of the North Plantation premises with the Guernsey Information Centre from as early as October this year.

Guernsey Post has consulted with relevant States Departments, Postwatch Guernsey and the Town Centre Partnership over the move.

Chief Executive Gordon Steele said: “The new premises have always played a pivotal part in the life of the town and offer excellent access from the laceName w:st="on">NorthlaceName> laceType w:st="on">BeachlaceType> car park and the bus terminus.

“The Smith Street building is effectively derelict, has unusable space and the rent is too expensive in relation to the price of a stamp. We have been looking over the last 18 months for a workable alternative location.”

There are plans to have longer opening hours at the new premises and all day Saturday opening is being considered.

 Guernsey Post will occupy the far end of the ground floor within the North Plantation premises and will sell its merchandise alongside the Information Centre.

“We will also have a Postal Agency Branch within the proposed new Cooperative Locale store on the site of the former fish market. Our plans for the North Plantation will complement this by offering a full range of products and services, including postal services, financial services and Town-based Private Boxes.”

Allan Smith, Chief Executive of The Channel Islands Co-operative Society Limited, said: “The newly-refurbished market is proving very popular and we are delighted that the Co-op will be offering postal services to customers from our new innovative Locale food store at the south end of Town.”
