| I read in the press today (15/05-2008 page 6) that Long Port now have the Saltpans site and they will develop the area. CGi and Chamber are quite rightly keen to see the inclusion of some smaller units, reasonably priced for start ups and/or the smaller Guernsey businesses.
I hope this is the case...!
What sort of things would YOU like to see there, how big should the units be etc?
How should they be zoned? Will the Environment Dept. limit what can be done within them? Should they?
C'mon Guernsey Chamber Members, lets have some ideas batted around, you never know, someone might be watching and you might just get what we want / need?

| Adam Judging by the response maybe a huge shed would be the answer... on second thoughts there's already one of those going up at the Pitronnerie road site. Have you seen the size of it? Let's hope the Saltpans site can be developed to provide the space that this island requires now and in the future, with the relevant access to and from the different areas of the site. Garrick

| | You only have to look over the water at the UK and see what can be done in sone green belt rural locations with some simple (cheap) industrial sites for light industry. They can be in keeping with the island and really benefit small local business. Perhaps the way to control cost is have the states as landlord with subsidised rates for local businesses employing local people. |

| Perhaps the way to control cost is have the states as landlord with subsidised rates for local businesses employing local people. That gets my vote. There are ample opportunities for government to create enterprise zones with rent controls. The 'problem' with the Salt Pans, as welcome as it is, is the owner will be looking at maximising his investment and will lease properties for the highest possible returns. Usually meaning logisitcs, data centres, fulfillment and archiving.
There is a whole middle area between the 'fred in the shed' and the data centres that need premises. Enterprise and clean start ups that would benefit being in an 'enterprise zone'. |

| Neil,
I feel you are right on this one, and developer is looking for a return on his cost and will more than likely pay his taxes elsewhere meaning little chance of Guernsey gaining. A states initiative with them as landlord makes a lot of sense and gives the Guern's what they say they want with control over who uses them. Still, that sounds far too simple to work ! |
