The rubbish issue is a very old one, which I thought had been resolved a few years ago. It depends on which parish you are in, and some gave you all or part of your rubbish rate back if you had private contractors, some didn’t charge in the first place, and some charged and kept it!. As I say, I thought this had been sorted out a good few years ago so you didn’t pay twice, but it may have changed again. It used to cause a lot of bad feeling.

Suggest Environment dept  might be able to help the individual

We had this rubbish thing before BUT if we bring it up it will assist the states to levy an even more ‘commercial’ rates on us all

Yes the parish rates include 1 bag of rubbish collection per household (2 in town I think)

But hey a Full breakfast included everything, if the guest chooses not to have say a tomato we do not give a discount likewise, the price of a cup of coffee is the same with or without milk and sugar!

See what I mean!!

So I for one am happy to pay my parish rates and IF I choose to I can leave 2 bags 1 for Hotel 1 for my private Cottage out on the kerb side on a Wednesday night and lo and behold, it will be gone

This situation was the subject of much debate years ago.

I had thought that the situation had been resolved in that the Commercial sector, Hotels, Guesthouses, etc., who pay for the disposal of all their waste, were not then charged by the Parish for refuse rate.
I think your Hotelier needs to check this out with the Parish Constable

In St Peters Parish the ******** Hotel and the L`Eree Hotel pay their rubbish rate but when they provide a receipt for private collection then the parish rate is refunded.

The assumption is that they will get the refund and so when the refuse rate is calculated this is taken into account.

Otherwise the Hotels could put many bins out for a weekly collection which would be a health hazard.

The reason it is done this way is that by law all properties must pay a refuse rate. The Rubbish collector when providing a tender knows that those hotels will not require a collection

Hope this Helps,

Chris

I can confirm that Bon Port pays for the use of a private rubbish collection and also pays Parish refuse rates. We have questioned this with the local Deputy on several occasions to be told ‘’that is they way it is, always has been always will be’’ his words not mine !

Chris,

Change of information.

2002 The States had passed by law that all properties need not have a rubbish rate charge.

So recently we at St Peters do not now bill the two hotels when we are satisfied that an alternative arrangement is in place.

This supersedes the previous system we used.

Sorry to misinform you earlier, I was working on what we used before the Law was changed.

So one would assume that this would be the same for ANY business?
