| I recently advertised our exciting Christmas Menus on the back of the Globe and had a great response.
However I also received a call form a nice lady pointing out we were offering Foie Gras and she thought that it was produced in such a way that it was cruel to the Ducks and Geese.I duly offered her a table but no she was vegetarian and wasn't going to dine with us if we kept the Foie Gras on the menu.It probably didn't help matters much by me asking whatever next ,should we stop offering Turkeys at Christmas?
Anyhow today I received an information sheet from Viva (www.viva.org.uk) asking me to remove it immediately .
What is the feeling in the trade ? It seems its already banned in UK supermarkets and there is
mounting pressure to get it banned in UK Restaurants.
Has anyone else had pressure exerted on them ? |

| | As a customer, not that you were asking, Foie gras wouldn't put me off your establishment. I wouldn't necessarily choose it but I wouldn't nail myself to your door until you removed it from your menu either. Looking at the Viva site you are on a hiding to nothing; if said lady is a fully paid up member, they appear the extreme end of vegatarianism. |

| Do I need 24 hour protection then ?
I reckon they heard about me shooting an Eagle on the Eighth last month and got the wrong end of the stick.
Seriously though still a very popular dish.

| Reading this weeks Restaurant magazine it seems the two star Midsummer House in Cambridge has been forced into taking foie gras off the menu after weeks of noisy protest.
Also in the city of York councillors called for a nation wide ban on the use of Foie gras, trying also to discourage restauranteurs and food shops from selling it !
You heard it here first ! |

| As a veggie, it really does go against the 'grain' and comments of "what about the poor carrots, they have feelings too" is just silly and i am sure it must have been written in jest?
Anyway, as a veggie i do not begrudge anyone eating meat of any kind WITHIN REASON!
Force fed animals where their livers are oversized because of it is wrong, ABSOLUTELY WRONG, as is veal, battery chickens / eggs, vastly over populated indoor chicken runs (Hugh and Jamie did a brilliant job in letting people know where their chicken and eggs come from) in fact any food derived from badly treated animals, living poor conditions and subjected to eating (force feeding) in obscure ways they wouldn't normally.
We are omnivores, designed to eat both meat and veg, i choose not to eat meat, my choice but if i did eat meat i would also choose to avoid animals and food that were treated and produced in such miserable and draconian ways.
Basically if you are prepared to nurture, kill, skin, gut and eat the animal in front of you then good for you, go ahead, you are the sort of person that should enjoy the same, if you are not then the least you can do is choose something that has lead a happy and as full a life as possible.
If any restaurant or hotel makes an effort to remove such food and animals from their menus they should be applauded, and recognised as making a conscious decision not to support this trade.
I am not the sort of veggie that comments when a table guest orders a rare steak as i used to love it myself, as i said earlier eat what you like, just be aware of what it is and how it is produced, if you can then eat Foie Gras go-ahead.... its your conscience.
