| Wheels in motion for charity sprint challenge
ANDY Priaulx will be racing behind the wheel of a very different kind of vehicle when he takes part in a Vazon sprint later this month.
The Double World Touring Car Champion will be swapping his usual BMW for one of Island Coachways’ new 16-seater Iveco coaches to take part in the ‘Sprint for Hope’ in aid of Hope for Guernsey.
Islanders are being invited to help raise funds for the charity by paying a minimum of £1 to guess the exact time it will take Andy to cross the finish line.
Local businesses have generously donated a selection of top prizes and the nearest guess will receive a Condor voucher for two adults and up to three children for travel to the UK or France with a car.
Organised by Island Coachways’ fleet manager Tom Wilson, with help from the Guernsey Kart and Motorcycle Club, ‘Sprint for Hope’ will raise money for Hope for Guernsey’s continued research into breast cancer.
‘Over the past eight months Guernsey has raised £65,000 to pay for ground breaking breast cancer research at Southampton University,’ said Hope for Guernsey chairman Roger Allsopp.
‘This has been used for a pilot study, which has involved taking blood samples from Guernsey women volunteers over the last 40 years, that has made huge advances into the early detection of breast cancer. The potential gain this research could bring to women in Guernsey and across the world, that is the early diagnosis of cancer, cannot be overemphasised.
‘The island has played such a pivotal role in this medical research and it is to the credit of local people organising fundraising events like ‘Sprint for Hope’ that we have been able to continue to support this project so substantially.’
Andy Priaulx, who is flying back especially for the ‘Sprint for Hope’ is looking forward to racing at a considerably slower pace than usual
‘My car in Pau, my last race, felt heavier than a bus so I am going to get there early for an on seat fitting and check the bus over to get the maximum out of it; my engineers have given me some tips for suspension set up so we should be set for at least getting off to a good start. I am really happy to be supporting this excellent local cause,’ he said.
Mr Wilson of Island Coachways, who has been the driving force behind the initiative, said: ‘So many of us have had our lives touched by cancer and Hope for Guernsey is a charity that is working so hard to find out more about the disease. The sprint idea just seemed like a good way of raising funds for Hope whilst also allowing us to race one of our new coaches.’
‘We could not have organised ‘Sprint for Hope’ without the support of many people, the Guernsey Kart and Motorcycle Club have been great sports in letting us gatecrash their event. Many thanks also go to all the businesses who have donated brilliant prizes and of course to the star of the show, Andy Priaulx, who is taking time out of his incredibly busy work and family schedule to come along and take part.’
Island Coachways’ new 16-seater Iveco will be de-restricted for this occasion so Andy can hope to climb up to fairly decent speed.
To guess Andy’s final ‘coach sprint time’ simply fill in one the entry forms published in the Guernsey Press, or collect one from the Island Coachways or Condor Ferries offices.
Sprint for Hope entry forms can also be downloaded on the Submarine charitable trust website www.appeal.gg.
Organisers are requesting that islanders donate a minimum of £1 per guess. All funds raised will go to Hope for Guernsey.
The ‘Sprint for Hope’ will take place at 3pm, Saturday 30 June at the Vazon Bay sprint course.

| Many thanks for all your support. We raised over £3,000 for Hope for Guernsey.
These funds have been ring fenced for a Southampton based research project on blood samples provided by local women. They are being analysed for potential markers of breast cancer, with a view to providing an early diagnosis for potential sufferers.
The weather was not particularly kind on the day. However, Andy Priaulx clearly enjoyed himself and the event was appreciated by the small crowd who had gathered to watch him. Following a wheel spin on the starting line, Andy put his foot to the floor and was travelling at over 65 mph by the time he reached the finishing line.
Special thanks to the following who provided prizes:
