| | With the impending debate on the Stategic Economic Plan, Chamber has joined with IOD, CGi and GIBA to issue a joint letter to all Duputies calling for support of the Plan by their vote to adopt it at the States meeting. This letter is very clear and shows the full support from those that represent the business community. All those involved with the plan should be applauded, the key is to get it adopted without amendment, as with the whole Zero Ten debate. My concern is the plan is well thought out and amendments may not be fully appreciated in terms of their overall effect. The timing of this is also important as failure to get this adopted will see a delay of at least 18 months possibly two years as we head towards the elections next year. Chamber would appreciate your views on this.

| | While I strongly agree with the sentiments of the letter, I am conscious of the comments from the Housing Minister the other evening, repeated again in today's Press concerning licences, that the average man in the street needs to be carried with this debate, as well as the Deputies. I appreciate the letter is addressed to the Deputies, but it will inevitably become public and business, especially the Finance Industry, needs to show a some empathy with the fiscal pain which is going to come in 2008. Perhaps extending the 4th paragraph to explain that although the aim is to maintain the standard of living through business growth through the Strategic Economic Plan, it is also to retain the uniqueness of Guernsey as a place to live and thereby providing the money for the services many Guernsey people want to see extended and improved, such as schools, hospital facilities etc. Otherwise we are likely to loose the debate to headlines such as those on Friday from Mr Roffey. The Plan provides Government with an opportunity to provide a cohesive approach and therefore deal with members concerns over its current approach, which appears to be uncoordinated. Therefore I believe we should be supporting it wholeheartedly. |
