I have just received a call from a lady stating that my inclusion into a charity publication had been successful and they were about to go to print, before she got to the part about invoice and payment, I told her that I had NOT asked to be in the publication and so she rang off.

You may well have been approached in the past by people saying they are representing various charities, fire departments etc. (usually UK based) that are looking for advertisers for diaries, wall planners etc. There mode of operation is to sign you up, and get there fee. Now I may be wrong about this, but as the law stood, they only had to produce a very small amount (40 rings a bell) and that if they did this they were not breaking any law.

I am not saying that all such calls are bogus but please make sure you know all the facts before entering into such an agreement

A few responses from members out there

"OK and thanks. We were aware of such scams and buying expensive books too - that's another one - they just come with an invoice - and you haven't ordered it in the first place!"

"I am being hassled by a charity called CPUK  claiming that we have agreed to advertise in a drugs awareness book, they have printed 32 books @ £209.00, and are looking for payment before sending them out, I have no knowledge or acknowledgement that I have a agreed to this, I then found this on the net ….

Business : Con people claiming you sponsored children's books?

Has anybody else ever had a company calling themselves CPUK telephone them and claim they sponsored some books to be published for local children in their area? 'Michelle' just claimed our books had been printed following our agreement in February. I told her the idea was entirely in her own imagination and complete nonsense. From talking to a friend he also received a similar call, this must be a scam to watch out for preying on your guilt over apparent ability to forget agreements - because we're all so busy and stupid. Imagine there is some degree of success with this guilt pushing sales technique."

"Thank you for this message, I have been approached continuously by these people and even paid out some monies last year.

I am wise to it now and refuse to speak to them.

I personally think it is a matter for the police now as they caught me when I was very busy and got me confused so that I ended up agreeing to something I  did not want.  The one I paid said they were representing the Police!

I am willing to talk to you further about this, if you deem it relevant.
Kind regards,"

"Thanks for the warning. The charities are sometimes local & bona fide. They are approached and told that they will receive a quantity of free diaries to sell and sometimes some cash and in return all they have to do is provide details of supporters and suppliers who might like to advertise in the diary. The diary suppliers make a lot of money from the advertising and generally the charity gets fewer and fewer free diaries each year. We used to advertise in one but they blatantly tried to double charge us so we told the charity we would rather give them the cost of advertising as a donation. Les Bourgs Hospice seem to be happy with their diary supplier although personally I prefer my Filofax and try to return the diary to the hospice shop every year"

"We have received similar calls in the past, stating that if we wished to be in the publication again this year that they would need payment etc. To which of course they got the same response.

I believe the Chamber of Commerce were advised (but cannot be sure) as I did not tell them personally"
