| Very topical. We are keen to work with customers to reduce landfill charges passed on to them. In Guernsey the situation is more dire than the UK for the following reasons:1. Standard charge at Mont Cuet will rise form £86.20 to £115 per tonne on 01/01/07, a lot higher than many UK areas. 2. We believe landfill charges will continue to rise significantly year on year. 3. We consider there to be insufficient landfill at Mont Cuet to last until 2011 when the "final solution" what ever it will be will come on line. 4. The Environment Department has still to publish their waste strategy, but this may be out in December this year. 5. It is illegal for commercial waste to enter the "bring scheme" bins, or the skips for green waste and metal recently made available free of charge by the Environment Department, but...........
We operate eurobin rounds and a separation facility at Pointes Lane. If anybody has room for more than one bin we can offer reduced charges on the basis that dry recyclables, which we will not take to the tip, are kept separate from wet waste. John. |

| | Thanks for that John, so what do we do ? We all know its a problem but what is the answer, I know this is a biggy which Chamber has been working on for some time now but what can hotels and restaurants do to ease the situation:- Are compactors any good What steps can we take now on a day to day basis What alternatives are there to the states waste collection I really dont know where to start on this one, did think of sending my stuff to Herm to let Johnathan deal with it for me !! |

| | Not so daft. Sark has recently installed a portable incinerator (comes like a container), Alderney will probable build a modest mass burn plant, and Herm .. well. In effect the rest of the Bailiwick is ahead of us Guerns, who still just chuck 90% of domestic and "wet" commercial waste into a hole. What is economic to recycle in guernsey for a business? Lets not get into builders waste, but it is well work keeping the following separate from "black bag waste" food waste, kitchen oil etc: Metals - all grades, especially non-ferrous Cardboard, paper, magazines Plastics, sheet wrap and rigid plastics All must be clean and as free of contamination as possible to be recyclable. They can all be put into one eurobin and collect by us or one of our competitors, and we would be delighted to recycle this for them, at a considerable discount to the tip cost. Others: Glass - bring scheme if private household, or Bulwer Avenue if commercial. There are currently no lass collection rounds in the Island, but if the demand was there it would be viable. Bulwer Av charge £30 ish a tonne I think, not for recycling but processing and tipping at Longue Hougue as inert waste. Green waste, on its own and less than 1/2 diameter, free tip at Chouet for private household. £7 ish for commercial. Builders waste - bring it to us if mixed, or if good quality hardcore with little contamination to Ronez. charged £5-£7/tonne depending on demand and quality. The main saving to the trade should be from keeping recyclables out of your eurobins that go to the tip, so you don't get tip charges passed directly from the States to you via your waste disposal supplier. Any help - please ask! John. |

| | John, Is there such a machine available on the market that compacts used newspapers/paper/cardboard into brick size pieces that can then be used as open fire fuel? |

| | Yes it is possible, would have to be done on an industrial scale to be profitable (labour mainly), we have a market for newsprint at present through Mayside which would probably not make this viable. Quick look on internet found these: www.newdawnengineering.com Best wishes, John. Edit<< Sorry John had to edit the links, they were spannering the front-page. Only one at the moment until I fix. Cheers Neil |
